Growing
Roses
Roses are heavily pruned each spring to renew and rejuvenate the
plant for another season of beautiful blossoms. Don't be afraid; they will
grow back more beautiful than ever.
Hybrid Tea, floribunda and
grandiflora roses can be pruned back to a
height of 12–18 inches. Remove all stems smaller than a pencil, leaving
behind 3-5 of the strongest and thickest stems. This encourages the plant to
channel all of its energy into large, long-stemmed roses.
Shrub or landscape roses are not
pruned as severely as other types. They can be cut back with hedge clippers
to a height of 18–24 inches, leaving some of the smaller stems on the plant.
This promotes a profusion of colorful blooms by late spring.
After the pruning is completed,
fertilize and freshen up the mulch. This is also a good time to apply Lime
Sulfur Spray to eliminate insects and disease organisms that may be
on the remaining rose canes.
Roses will need ongoing care
throughout the year. Try using Immunox Plus to prevent insect and disease
problems and Rose fertilizer to keep your roses healthy and blooming
beautifully.
